What’s in a Name?

Now that the blog has officially begun, this seems to be a good time to say something about the name “Every Square Inch.” No doubt some of you have already noticed that the name is tied to the quotation by Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper found on the blog’s front page: “There is not one square inch of the entire creation about which Jesus Christ does not cry out, “This is mine! This belongs to me.”

But let me elaborate a bit further.

One of the foundational biblical truths that drives the ministry at The Crossing is that there is no aspect of our lives and world that should be thought of as outside the authority, interest, and redemptive work of Christ (see, for example, Colossians 1:15-20).

So, for example, Christ cares enormously about the salvation of his people from their sin. But he also cares about every other aspect of his creation and what we do with it. Yes, he’s keenly interested in what takes place on Sunday mornings. But he also has an attentive eye for everything that takes place in between.

We chose the name “Every Square Inch” because it, along with the quotation from which it came, points us in the direction of living out the truth of what I’ve just mentioned. We want this to be a place that will help us all to experience the lordship and redemptive power of Christ in more and more areas of our lives and culture.

So whether we’re posting devotionals or commenting on cultural trends, examining movies or defending the claims of Christianity, the idea is to advance the cause of Christ…even if it’s one inch at a time.
