Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. Our good friend, Gerik Parmele, provided photos to offer a glimpse into the Sunday morning life of The Crossing. You’ll also find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs when available.
1. Sanctus – Words: Traditional (c. 1st century), Music: Christine Cover and Scott Johnson
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
2. Opening Response: Based on Ephesians 1:3-10 (from the Worship Sourcebook)
All glorious God, we give you thanks:
in your Son, Jesus Christ,
you have given us every spiritual blessing
in the heavenly realms.
You chose us, before the world was made,
to be your holy people, without fault in your sight.
You adopted us as your children in Christ.
You have set us free by his blood;
you have forgiven our sins.
You have made known to us your secret purpose,
to bring heaven and earth into unity in Christ.
You have given us your Holy Spirit,
the seal and pledge of our inheritance.
All praise and glory be yours, O God,
for the richness of your grace,
for the splendor of your gifts,
for the wonder of your love.
Amen.
3. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing – Words by Robert Robinson (1758), Music: NETTLETON, Wyeth’s Repository of Sacred Music, Part Second by John Wyeth (1813), Based on an arrangement by Page CXVI
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home..
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;
4. How Great Thou Art – by Stuart K. Hine, Based on an arrangement by Page CXVI
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul to my Savior, God.
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
5. Call to Confession: 1 John 1:8-9
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
6. Prayer of Confession (from the Worship Sourcebook)
Righteous Father,
We who own more than we use,
proclaim more than we experience,
and request more than we need,
come asking your forgiveness.
We seek your salvation, then act like we save ourselves.
We beg your forgiveness, then repeat our sin.
We experience your grace, then act defeated.
We rely on your power, but only in hard times.
We have become confused and misguided.
God of mercy, forgive our every act of rebellion.
Bring us to an unbroken commitment and a steady trust,
through Jesus Christ, who is the way of hope,
the truth of God, and the life of love,
now and always. Amen.
7. Assurance of Forgiveness: Isaiah 54:8, 43:25, 44:22
In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting kindness
will have compassion on you,”
says the Lord your Redeemer.
“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions,
for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”
“I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,
your sins like the morning mist.
Return to me, for I have redeemed you.”
8. Jesus Paid it All – Words: Elvina M. Hall (1865), Music: John T. Grape (1835-1915), Arrangement: Kings Kaleidoscope
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone,
can change the leper’s spots
and melt the heart of stone.”
Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.
9. Amazing Grace – Words: John Newton (1779), Music: James P. Carrell and David S. Clayton (1831), Additional lyrics, chorus and arrangement: Page CXVI
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind but now I see.
I will sing to you this song of praise.
for giving me abundant grace.
You broke the stones around my heart;
In you I’ve been redeemed.
10. Revelation Song by Jennie Lee Riddle
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
holy, holy is he.
Sing a new song to Him who sits on
heaven’s mercy seat.
Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord, God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come.
