Songs and Scenes: Sunday, February 2, 2014

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday liturgy. The Crossing’s Multimedia Director, Gerik Parmele, provided photos to offer a glimpse into Sunday morning life with The Crossing the Sunday following an ice storm in Columbia. This morning’s service was planned and led by David Cover. You’ll also find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs when available.

1. One Redeemer – by David A. Cover, Christine Cover and Patrick K. Miller

From start to end,
You are the “Amen!”
to Your promises,
Jesus, my soul’s Savior,
the great story’s One Redeemer.

2. Call to Worship: Psalm 95:1-7

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.

3. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty – Words: Joachim Neander (1680), Music: Lobe Herren (1665), Arrangement and chorus: The Crossing Music

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation!
O My soul, praise Him
for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Praise him in glad adoration.

4. Confession: Psalm 51:15-17

Open my lips, Lord,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is[a] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.

5. Wandering Soul – by David A. Cover and Christine Cover

There’s nothing I can do
to take away the shame that I feel.
There’s nothing I can do

to shed the burdens carried with me.
I’m a sinner with a wand’ring soul.

But I felt the weight lift off of me
when I heard a Voice call out to me,
“It is done. It is finished.

I AM what you have been seeking.”

6. It is Finished by Dustin Kensrue

There’s no deed that can redeem us.
There’s no rite, no magic word.
Only by the work of Jesus
cann salvation be secured.

It is finished! He has done it!
let your weary heart rejoice.
Our redemption is accomplished
raise a shout with ragged voice.

7. Assurance: Hebrews 4:14-16

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

8. Before the Throne – Words: Charitie L. Bancroft (1863), Music: Vikki Cook, Arrangement: the Modern Post

When Satan tempts me to despair
and tells me of the guilt within
upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
my sinful soul is counted free
for God the just is satisfied
to look on Him and pardon me.

6. Speak, O Lord by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend

Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
to receive the food of Your Holy Word.
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
that the light of Christ might be seen today.
in our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
all Your purposes for Your glory.
