Songs and Scenes: October 2, 2016

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. We’ve included a link to a Spotify playlist of Sunday’s songs (when available) so you can enjoy listening to them throughout your week. This week’s liturgy recap features photos by Dan Gill.

1. Salvation’s Tide by Matt Maher, Jason Ingram, Brett Younker, Kristian Stanfill

Let the walls come down in Jesus name
Let the lost be found in Jesus name
Let the church arise to shine your light to the world
Shine your light
Open eyes to see in Jesus name
Let the city sing in Jesus name
Let the church arise to shine your light to the world
Shine your light

Salvations tide is rising
As all your people seek your face
Your life a river flowing
To wash our sin and shame away

2. Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:3-6

Leader: Jesus was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

All: Man of Sorrows, Lamb of God

Leader: Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.

All: Man of Sorrows, Lamb of God

Leader: But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

All: Man of Sorrows, Lamb of God

Leader: We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

3. Man of Sorrows by Brooke Ligertwood and Matt Crocker

Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid

Oh that rugged cross, my salvation,
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out, Hallelujah
Praise and honor unto Thee

4. Nothing But the Blood – Words and Music by Robert Lowry

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

How precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
nothing but the blood of Jesus.

5. Assurance: Based on Romans 8:1-2, 15-16 & Zephaniah 3:17

Leader: Sisters and brothers, there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death… For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

All: I am a child of God.

Leader: So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves.
Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.

All: I am a child of God.

Leader: Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

All: I am a child of God.

Leader: So don’t be afraid!
In Christ, your heavenly father takes delight in you
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

6. No Longer Slaves (to Fear) by Brian Johnson, Jonathan David Helser, Joel Case

You unravel me, with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance, from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

7. Communion Song: Before the Throne – Words: Charitie L. Bancroft (1863), Music: Vikki Cook, Arrangement: Citizens and Saints

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

8. Communion Song: O Praise The Name (Anástasis) by Marty Sampson, Benjamin Hastings & Dean Ussher

Then on the third at break of dawn,
the Son of heaven rose again.
O trampled death where is your sting?
The angels roar for Christ the King!

O praise the Name of the Lord our God.
O praise His Name forevermore.
For endless days we will sing Your praise,
Oh Lord, oh Lord, our God.
