Songs and Scenes: January 1, 2017

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. We’ve included a link to a Spotify playlist of Sunday’s songs (when available) so you can enjoy listening to them throughout your week. This week’s liturgy recap features photos by Dan Gill.

1. Call to Worship: James 1:16-18 (adapted from Sojourn Community Church)

Don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.

2. I Sing the Mighty Power of God – Verse Lyrics: Isaac Watts (1715); Additional Lyrics: Scott Johnson & Keith Scherer, Music: The Crossing Music

I sing the mighty power of God, that made the mountains rise,

that spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;

the moon shines full at God’s command, and all the stars obey.

All praise to You, Eternal God,
You made the heavens and earth.
Giving life and breath to everyone,
sustaining all things by Your word.

3. Almighty God by Leslie Jordan, David Leonard, and Sandra McCracken

Almighty God to you all hearts are open
Search and know our thoughts and anxious fears
Wash us in the fountain of your mercy
Come with your light, we cannot hide from you

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

4. Call to Confession: Psalm 139:1-6, 23-24 (adapted from Sojourn Community Church)

Leader: You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you,
LORD, know it completely.

You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain…

Heavenly Father, hear our prayer together:

All: Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

5. Great is Thy Faithfulness – Words: Thomas O. Chisholm, Music: William M. Runyan, Based on an arrangement by Sandra McCracken

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

6. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing – Words: Robert Robinson (1758); Music: John Wyeth (1839)

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Hither by Thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood

7. All Glory Be to Christ – Words: Dustin Kensrue, Music: Traditional

When on the day the great I Am,
the faithful and the true
The Lamb who was for sinners slain,
is making all things new.

Behold our God shall live with us
and be our steadfast light
And we shall ere his people be,
all glory be to Christ!

All glory be to Christ our king!
All glory be to Christ!
His rule and reign will ever sing,
all glory be to Christ!
