Songs and Scenes from Sunday, March 3, 2013 (Updated with Photos)

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday services. In order to provide a glimpse in Sunday morning life at The Crossing, Timmy Huynh graciously took photos of the morning. You will also find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs where available.

Gathering Song: Divine Invitation by Steve Hindalong and Eric Owyoung, Arrangement: Page CXVI

We are all here to find
the place where our restless souls will be free.
We were all made to see.
our hearts could not rest until found in Thee.

In this divine invitation we find Your embrace
and in our deep adoration see the light of Your face.
In this divine invitation we all find the place
for our souls where the longings were born long ago.

Here I Am to Worship by Tim Hughes, Arrangement: The Crossing Music

King of all days, oh, so highly exalted,
glorious in heaven above,
humbly You came to the earth You created.
All for love’s sake became poor.

Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down,
here I am to say that You’re my God.
You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy,
altogether wonderful to me.

O Help My Unbelief – Words: Isaac Watts, Music: Justin Smith

How sad our state by nature is!
our sin, how deep it stains!
and Satan binds our captive minds
Fast in his slavish chains.
But there’s a voice of sov’reign grace,
sounds from the sacred word:
“O, ye despairing sinners come,
and trust upon the Lord.”

Our call to confession was from Isaiah 1:18. Despite our unbelief, God calls us back to Himself so that we may know the cleansing from sin He promises through Jesus Christ.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.

We heard the assurance of God’s forgiveness in a reading adapted from Hebrews 10:10, Question 66 of the Heidelberg Catechism and Isaiah 1:18.

We have been made holy
through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ
once for all.

Because of Christ’s one sacrifice finished on the cross,
God will never hold against me
any of my sins nor my sinful nature
which I need to struggle against all my life.
Instead, in his grace,
God gives me the righteousness of Christ
to free me forever from judgement.

This is God’s Gospel promise:

“Though my sins are like scarlet,
In Christ, they are as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
In Christ, they are like wool.”

Jesus Paid it All – Words: Elvina M. Hall (1865), Music: John T. Grape, Arrangement: Kings Kaleidoscope

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross – Words by Isaac Watts (1749), Music by Lowell Mason (1824)

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

Sebastian Junger, director of True Life Fund Film “Which Way Is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington”
speaks to the congregation of The Crossing.

All I Have is Christ by Jordan Kauflin

But as I ran my hellbound race,
indiffrent to the cost.
You looked upon my helpless state
and led me to the cross.
And I beheld God’s love displayed,
You suffered in my place.
You bore the wrath reserved for me,
now all I know is grace.

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ.
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.
