This week’s Songs and Scenes features photos by Gerik Parmele. You’ll find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs (where available). This setlist (along with many other churches) is also archived at the Sunday Setlist blog at The Worship Community.

Our call to worship was from 2 Corinthians 4:6-7.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

All I Have is Christ by Jordan Kauflin

But as I ran my hell-bound race, indifferent to the cost,
You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross.
And I beheld God’s love displayed, You suffered in my place,
You bore the wrath reserved for me, now all I know is grace.
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.

Kristen led us in a confession (adapted from The Worship Sourcebook) that expressed our need to find rest in Christ, our great Shepherd.

Christ, you are the great shepherd,
you tenderly gather us as lambs and carry us with
your all-embracing love.

Yet, like sheep, we wander from you: following our own ways,
ignoring your voice, distrusting your provisions.
Forgive our stubborn rebellion,
our hardened hearts, and lack of trust.

Refresh us once again by your quiet waters of mercy and
restore our souls by your redeeming love.
Guide our paths, that we might follow you more closely.

Jesus, Lover of My Soul – Words: Charles Wesley (1740), Music: Chris Eaton and John Hartley

Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
grace to cover all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound;
make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
freely let me take of Thee;
Spring Thou up within my heart;
rise to all eternity.

An adapted version of Psalm 103:3-5 provided assurance of God’s soul restoring, life transforming power at work in our lives.

The Lord forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases.
The Lord redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion.
The Lord satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

You Have Redeemed My Soul by Don and Lori Chafer

You Have Redeemed My Soul is one of the first songs we sang as a church when The Crossing started eleven years ago. It has enjoyed new life in this wonderful arrangement by our friends Page CXVI and David Wilton (who produced The Crossing’s Music’s upcoming recording).

I was a hungry child, a dried up river.
I was a burned out forest
and no one could do anything for me.
But You put food in my body,
water in my dry bed,
and to my blackened branches
you brought the springtime green of new life, of new life.

Rock of Ages – Words: Augustus M. Toplady (1776), Contemporary chorus by Page CXVI. Arrangement by Page CXVI and David Wilton

Rock of Ages reminds us that there is nothing that we can do to rid ourselves of the stain of sin. We are saved through Jesus Christ alone.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.

The Gospel Song by Drew Jones and Bob Kauflin

Holy God, in love, became
perfect Man to bear my blame.
On the cross He took my sin.
By His death I live again.

Absent from Flesh – Words: Issac Watts (1707), Music and adapted lyrics: Jamie Barnes

This song by Sojourn Music (from the album The Water and the Blood) was a rousing way to finish communion and close the service.

I go where God and glory shine,
to one eternal day.
This failing body I now resign
for angels point my way,
for the angels point my way!
