This morning our service incorporated readings from Kenneth Boa’s Handbook to Renewal to guide us in corporate worship. The Handbook to Renewal helps us to pray scriptures back to God with daily readings that affirm the attributes of God, the works of God, my relationship to God, the character I want to cultivate, and my relationship to others. It’s an excellent resource for daily prayer and can be found in The Crossing’s bookstore.
Gathering Instrumental: Stumptown by Chris Thile
Attributes of God: adapted from Numbers 23:19 and 1 Samuel 15:29
“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He spoken and not done it? Has He promised and not fulfilled it?”
“He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind, for He is not a man, that He should change His mind.”
Unchanging by Chris Tomlin
You were, You are, You will always be.
You were, You are, You will always be.
So we raise up holy hands
to praise the Holy One
Who was and is and is to come.
O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing by Charles Wesley (1739), Contemporary chorus by David Crowder and Jack Parker
He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.
The Works of God: adapted from Micah 7:18-19
“Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgressions of the remnant of His inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will have compassion on Your people; You will tread their iniquities underfoot and hurl all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
God Who Saves by Aaron Senseman
There is life in the blood
of the Lamb who was slain.
There is power, there is power in His name.
There is love pouring out
of the wounds that were made,
pouring out, pouring over our shame.
My Relationship to God: adapted from Psalm 40:2-3 and John 8:32, 34-36
“God lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.”
“I shall know the truth, and the truth shall set me free. Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets me free, I shall be free indeed.”
Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Words by John Newton (1779), Music by Virginia Harmony (1831), Arrangement and contemporary chorus by Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind but now I see.
Jesus, All For Jesus by Robin Mark and Jennifer Atkinson
Jesus, all for Jesus,
All I am and have and ever hope to be.
All of my ambitions, hopes and plans
I surrender these into Your hands.
