Songs and Scenes: February 21, 2016

Songs-and-Scenes-Banner C

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. This week, we’re trying something new. We’ve included a link to a Spotify playlist of Sunday’s songs so you can enjoy listening to them throughout your week. This week’s liturgy recap features photos by Scott Myers.

1. 10,000 Reason (Bless the Lord) by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul;
worship His holy name.
Sing like never before, O my soul;
I’ll worship Your holy name.

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger.
Your name is great and Your heart is kind.
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing;
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

2. Scripture Reading: Psalm 103:2-5a (The Message)

O my soul, bless God,
don’t forget a single blessing!
He forgives your sins—every one.
He heals your diseases—every one.
He redeems you from hell—saves your life!
He crowns you with love and mercy—a paradise crown.
He wraps you in goodness—beauty eternal.

3. The Christ, Our Light by Martin Reardon

When all was dark and without dawn
You gave us Light, you sent your Son.
The Christ, the Christ, He shines, He shines
to drive all dark away, away.

4. Scripture Reading: Psalm 13

O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever?
How long will you look the other way?
How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul,
with sorrow in my heart every day?
How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

Turn and answer me, O Lord my God!
Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.
Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!”
Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall.

But I trust in your unfailing love.
I will rejoice because you have rescued me.
I will sing to the Lord
because he is good to me.

5. Sovereign Over Us by Aaron Keyes, Jack Mooring, and Bryan Brown

There is strength within the sorrow.
There is beauty in our tears.
And You meet us in our mourning
with a love that casts out fear.
You are working in our waiting,
You’re sanctifying us.
When beyond our understanding
you’re teaching us to trust.

Your plans are still to prosper,
You have not forgotten us.
You’re with us in the fire and the flood.
Faithful forever, perfect in love,
You are sovereign over us.

6. Reflection: The Goodness of God in Christ (inspired by a reflection from Willow Creek Community Church)

Psalm 31:19 (NLT)
How great is the goodness

you have stored up for those who fear you.

You lavish it on those who come to you.

Jeremiah 32:40 (NLT)
I will make an everlasting covenant with them:
I will never stop doing good for them.

Romans 8:28 (NIV)
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)
I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

7. King of My Heart by John Mark McMillan and Sarah McMillan

Let the King of my heart
be the mountain where I run
The Fountain I drink from
Oh He is my Song
Let the King of my heart
be the shadow where I hide
the randsom for my life
Oh He is my Song

You are good, good, ohhh
You are good, good, ohhh
You are good, good, ohhh
You are good, good, ohhh

8. Video: The Apostle’s Creed by Faith Church in Dyer, Indiana

9. This I Believe (Creed) by Ben Fielding and Matt Crocker

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one

That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus
