Songs and Scenes: February 12, 2017

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. We’ve included a link to a Spotify playlist of Sunday’s songs (when available) so you can enjoy listening to them throughout your week. This week’s liturgy recap features photos by Scott Myers.

We’re excited to host Sandra McCracken (“We Will Feast in the House of Zion”) for an an intimate Hymn Sing on February 23 at 7 p.m. Click here for tickets and more information. Tickets are also available in The Crossing’s foyer on Sundays, at the front desk during regular office hours (9 a.m.–5 p.m.).

Crossing Worship

1. Behold Our God by Jonathan Baird, Meghan Baird and Stephen Altrogge

Who has felt the nails upon His hands
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man
God eternal humbled to the grave
Jesus, Savior risen now to reign!

Behold our God, seated on His throne.
Come, let us adore Him.

Crossing Worship

2. Almighty God by Leslie Jordan, David Leonard, and Sandra McCracken,
Arrangement: Daniel Burke-Aguero

Almighty God to you all hearts are open
Search and know our thoughts and anxious fears
Wash us in the fountain of your mercy
Come with your light, we cannot hide from you

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

3. Call to Confession

PSALM 27:1, 95:1

Leader: The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

All: Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

ISAIAH 55:1-2, 6-7

Leader: Everyone who thrists,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.

All: Why do you spend your money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?

Leader: Seek the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.

All: Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

Crossing Worship

4. O My Soul, Arise – Words: Charles Wesley (1742), Music and additional words: Eric McAllister

Arise, my soul, arise
Shake off your guilty fears
The bleeding sacrifice
On my behalf appears
Before the throne my surety stands
Before the throne my surety stands
My name is written on His hands

O my soul, arise
God owns you as His child
Shake off your guilty fears
My soul, arise

Crossing Worship

5. Words of Assurance

Romans 8:1-2, 14-16

Leader: Sisters and brothers, there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death… For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

All: I am a child of God.

ISAIAH 41:13

Leader: This is what our Heavenly Father says…
“I will hold you by your right hand—
I, the LORD your God.
And I say to you,
‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.”

All: I am a child of God.

ISAIAH 35:3-4

Leader: With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands,
and encourage those who have weak knees.
Say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, and do not fear,
for your God is coming to save you.

All: I am a child of God.

Leader: You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.

Crossing Worship

6. No Longer Slaves (to Fear) by Brian Johnson, Jonathan David Helser, Joel Case

You unravel me, with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance, from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

Crossing Worship

7. New Song: God’s Highway by Sandra McCracken and Thad Cockrell

My feet are strong, my eyes are clear
I cannot see the way from here
But on we go, He knows the way
And in His arms, He keeps me safe.

Fear not, keep on, watch and pray
Walk in the light of God’s highway

Crossing Worship

8. We Will Feast in the House of Zion by Sandra McCracken and Josh Moore

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored
He has done great things, we will say together
We will feast and weep no more

And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together, bring shalom.
