Songs-and-Scenes-Banner B

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. Today’s liturgy recap features photos by Lana Eklund. There are links in the song titles that will allow you to listen to or purchase recorded versions of the songs when available.

1. Call to Worship: Based on Psalm 33 (adapted by Sojourn Community Church)

Leader: The Lord merely spoke,
and the heavens were created.

All: He breathed the word,
and all the stars were born.
He assigned the sea its boundaries
and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.

Leader: Let the whole world fear the Lord,
and let everyone stand in awe of him.

All: For when he spoke, the world began!
It appeared at his command.

Leader: Sing a new song of praise to him
and sing with joy.

All: For the word of the Lord holds true,
and we can trust everything he does.
The unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.

2. Behold Our God by Jonathan Baird, Meghan Baird and Stephen Altrogge

Who has felt the nails upon His hands
Bearing all the guilt of sinful man?
God eternal humbled to the grave
Jesus, Savior risen now to reign!

Behold our God, seated on His throne.
Come, let us adore Him.
Behold our King—nothing can compare.
come, let us adore Him.

3. The Gospel Song by Bob Kauflin and Drew Jones

Holy God, in love, became
perfect Man to bear my blame.
On the cross He took my sin.
By His death I live again.

4. God Who Saves by Aaron Senseman

There is life in the blood of the lamb who was slain.
There is power, there is power in His name.
There is love pouring out of the wounds that were made;
Pouring out, pouring over our shame

Praise the God who saves.
Praise the God who bled.
Praise the God who was nailed to a tree
and wore our sins upon His head.

5. Call to Confesson: Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

6. Prayer of Confession (adapted from The Worship Sourcebook)

Leader: God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
You alone are holy and glorious.

All: We confess that we get distracted by far lesser glories–
money, sex, the opinions of others –
so many things that promise it all
but fail to deliver and satisfy.

Lord, have mercy on us
and cleanse us from our sin.

Leader: Remind us of the never-ending joy
we have as your children.

All: Show how us the abundant life
that is found in Jesus Christ.
Take our broken lives, reshape them
and use them for your Glory.

Leader: It’s in Jesus name we pray.

All: Amen.

7. Morning Star – Words: Isaac Watts (18th century); additional lyrics: David A. Cover; Music: Christine Cover, Greg Wiele, & Latifah Phillips

Come all ye hungry, starving souls,
that feed upon the wind,
and vainly strive with earthly toils
to fill an empty mind.

Eternal Wisdom has prepared
a soul-reviving feast;
and bids your longing appetites
the rich provision taste.

8. Celebration of Assurance: Psalm 34:4-6, 8

Leader: I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me.
He freed me from all my fears.

All: Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy;
no shadow of shame will darken their faces.

Leader: In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened;
he saved me from all my troubles.

All: Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him.

Leader: People of God, remember of the hope of the Gospel!

All: Jesus Christ restores us, makes us new,
and calls us to joy-filled, abundant life in his name.
Glory to God. Amen!

9. Gloria by Chad Gardner

O taste and see that the Lord is good;
all you people, all you saints
all you children of the king.
Gloria! Gloria!
Gloria!, Gloria!

10. Rejoice by Dustin Kensrue and Stuart Townend

Come and stand before your Maker
full of wonder full of fear.
Come behold his power and glory
yet with confidence draw near;
For the one who holds the heavens
and commands the stars above
is the God who bends to bless us
with an unrelenting love.

Come and lift your hands and raise your voice
He is worthy of all praise, Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your king
and with trembling, rejoice.
