Songs-and-Scenes-Banner Jodee

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. This week, we were fortunate to have Jodee Lewis and friends join us as guest musicians. Today’s liturgy recap features photos by Nate Herndon. You’ll find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs when available.

1. Call to Worship: Based on Psalm 37, Refrain by Jodee Lewis

SUNG: The Lord loves justice
and has promised
that he’ll never forsake us.

LEADER: Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

ALL: Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

LEADER: Be still before the LORD
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.

ALL: The LORD makes firm the steps
of the one who delights in him;
though he may stumble, he will not fall,
for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

LEADER: Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked;
for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the LORD upholds the righteous.

ALL: The blameless spend their days under the LORD’s care,
and their inheritance will endure forever.

LEADER: The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

ALL: The LORD helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

2. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing – Words: Robert Robinson (1758); Music: John Wyeth (1839), Arrangement: Jodee Lewis

Hither to Thy love has blessed me,
Thou has brought me to this place.
And I know Thy hand will bring me
safely home by Thy good grace.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wand’ring from the fold of God.
He, to rescue me from danger,
interposed His precious blood.

3. The Solid Rock – Words: Edward Mote (circa 1834), Music: William B. Bradbury (1863)

My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand,
all other ground is sinking sand,
all other ground is sinking sand.

4. Call to Confession: Psalm 33:20-22

LEADER: Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.

ALL: Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

Sunday worship- August 23, 2015

5. Prayer of Confession: One Hope (adapted from “Prone to Wander: Prayers of Confession and Celebration” by Barbara Duguid and Wayne Duguid Houk)

LEADER: Loving heavenly Father,
Your steadfast love greets us each morning,
and your faithfulness is our constant companion.

ALL: Your mercies are fresh each day,
flowing toward us in your
patient perseverance and loving guidance.

LEADER: Yet we mourn our sin and profound ingratitude to you.

ALL: We have not put our hope in you,
and we have not waited patiently
for you to act on our behalf.

We have looked to our idols to make us glad,
complaining bitterly when they have failed us.

LEADER: We have pressured people with the
heavy weight of our needs and expectations,
and sinned against them when they disappointed us.

LEADER: Father, forgive us for our many sins.

ALL: Lord, have mercy on us.

LEADER: Holy Spirit,
help us to turn away from our sin
and cling to the cross.

ALL: May we hide in the wounds of Jesus
and find shelter in his side.

LEADER: Help us to place all our hopes
in the powerful blood of our Savior
and his perfect righteousness in our place.

ALL: When life is painful and difficult,
and our souls give way to fear and temptation,
root us safely once again on our firm foundation, Jesus Christ,
our only hope in life and in death.

6. I Will Wait for You by Jodee Lewis (based on Lamentations 3)

Yet this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
Because of the Lord’s great love
we are not consumed,
Your compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
And I will wait for You.
And I will wait for You.

Sunday worship- August 23, 2015

7. Words of Assurance: Based on Isaiah 43:1-3a, Jeremiah, 29:11, Romans 8:28

LEADER: Listen to the Lord who created you.
O Israel, the one who formed you says,
“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.
I have called you by name; you are mine.

ALL: When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.

LEADER: For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

“I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord.
“They are plans for good and not for disaster,
to give you a future and a hope.”

ALL: Lord, help us to believe
that You cause everything to work together
for the good of those who love You
and are called according to Your purpose.

LEADER: This and all Your promises
find their fulfillment in the life, death, resurrection
and reign of our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ.

ALL: Thanks be to God, Amen.

8. How Firm a Foundation – Words: Various Attributions (1787) Music: Folk Tune, Arrangement: Jodee Lewis

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
to you, who for refuge to Jesus hath fled?

“When through the deep waters I call you to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless,
and sanctify to you your deepest distress.”

9. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross – Words: Isaac Watts (1707), Music: Lowell Mason (1824), Additional Chorus and Music: Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

O, the wonderful cross!
O, the wonderful cross
bids me come and die
and find that I might live again.
