Songs and Scenes: August 21, 2016

Songs and Scenes is a weekly blog review of songs, readings and prayers featured in The Crossing’s Sunday morning liturgy. We’ve included a link to a Spotify playlist of Sunday’s songs (when available) so you can enjoy listening to them throughout your week. This week’s liturgy recap features photos by Andrew Herndon.

1. The War is Won – Words: Joseph Hart, Additional Lyrics: Patrick Miller and David A. Cover, Music: The Crossing Music

Jesus once for sinners slain,
from the dead is raised again.
Cheerful let us raise our voice;
we have reason to rejoice.

The war is won, though battles rage.
Our risen King will end this age.
Until that day, stand in hope
of love that will forever flow.

2. Scripture Reading: Based on Romans 8:31-34

Leader: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution?

All: He will never let us go.

Leader: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? famine or nakedness, danger or sword?

All: He will never let us go.

Leader: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

All: He will never let us go.

Leader: For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons…

All: He will never let us go.

Leader: I am convinced that neither the present nor the future, nor any powers…

All: He will never let us go.

Leader: I am convinced that neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. The Mighty Hand of God by Brian Eichelberger, Cam Huxford, and Zach Bolen

The mighty hand of God that made the heavens and the earth
Was held by nails upon the cross to bear the sinner’s curse
The mighty hand of God undoes the wretched work of sin
Restores our lost and dying souls to victory in Him

He will never let us go, the grip of God will hold
He will never let us go, in Christ we are secure.

4. Call to Confession: 1 John 3:16a

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.

5. Man of Sorrows by Brooke Ligertwood and Matt Crocker

Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid

Oh that rugged cross, my salvation,
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out, Hallelujah
Praise and honor unto Thee

6. Passing of the Peace of Christ (Greeting Time): Romans 5:8, 1 John 4:11

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

7. Salvation’s Tide by Matt Maher, Jason Ingram, Brett Younker, Kristian Stanfill

Your house, forever, undivided
All your sons and daughters one
At the cross we are united
Our hope is in the blood
Our hope is in your blood

Let the walls come down in Jesus name
Let the lost be found in Jesus name
Let the church arise to shine your light to the world
Shine your light

8. Abide by Liz Vice

Jesus we will throw away our lives to follow you
Struggling in your strength, resting in your truth
Jesus, you’re so beautiful, you give vision to the blind
You in us, the hope of glory, in you we will abide
