Roman Polanski

The Bible warns us that this side of heaven there will always be people in moral confusion leading them to call evil good and good evil and that the future of such people isn’t pleasant (Isaiah 5:20). In spite of the prophetic warning I was still dumbfounded to learn that seemingly intelligent, rational people are coming to the defense of Roman Polanski, the accomplished film director.

You may have heard that in 1977 he plead guilty to “unlawful sex with a minor” and then fled the United States before he could be sentenced. Since then, he’s spent most of his time in France where he directed the award winning movie The Pianist. Just this week he was arrested in Switzerland where he was attending a film festival. Mr. Polanski now awaits extradition hearings.

One might have thought that a man who had plead guilty to drugging and raping a 13 year old girl would have a difficult time avoiding an international manhunt. But alas there was no manhunt because, for whatever reason, France essentially gave him a free pass.

One might have thought that a film director who had plead guilty to drugging and raping a 13 year old girl would have a difficult time finding actors to work in his film endeavors. But the pull to be a part of a project with a man as talented as Mr. Polanski was just too great.

Maybe no one wanted to be the person who made a big deal about it. But now that he’s been arrested, surely no one would object to him facing the justice system that he had eluded for 32 years. But if you think that, you have underestimated the moral confusion of our day.

Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese are just two of more than a hundred involved in the entertainment industry who have signed a petition protesting Polanski’s arrest and demanding his freedom. I didn’t think that I’d ever say this but I think that Jewel speaks for me in this tweet:

Polanski-admitted raping a 13 yr old-whys every1 in the arts upset hes facing jail? cause hes a gifted director? what am i missing?

I think that what she’s missing is that when people reject the one true God they begin down a path that eventually leads some to the point that they can’t call child rape wrong. Be careful of taking your cues from this crowd.
