Holy Week: Palm Sunday, April 1, 2012

This Sunday marked beginning of Holy Week where we remember Jesus’s triumphal entry, crucifixion and resurrection from the dead. With Palm Sunday we specifically remember when Jesus set out for Jerusalem and was proclaimed Messiah and King by those whose shouts of “Hosanna!” would soon become cries of, “crucify Him!” This morning, we followed Christ’s path from Jerusalem to the cross, seeking Him as our true Savior and King.

This week’s Sunday song review features photos by Gerik Parmele. You’ll find links in the song titles that will allow you to purchase recorded versions of the songs (where available)

Kingdom Days by Randall Goodgame

Lord, Thy mercies never fail,
Lord, they never fail.
Hail my savior, Jesus, hail,
hail King Jesus, hail.

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed – Words: James Montgomery (1821), Music and Arrangement: Vito Aiuto (2008)

Hail to the Lord’s anointed,
great David’s greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
To take away transgression
and rule in equity.

We read the Gospel of Mark’s account of Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest!”

The scripture reading was followed by a time of confession and assurance adapted from the Worship Sourcebook and based on Matthew 21:8-9, John 3:17, Ephesians 5:1-2.

Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

For Christ came into the world not to condemn the world,
but that the world through him should be saved.

Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children.
Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us,
a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Hosanna in the Highest!

by Brooke Fraser

I see the King of Glory
coming on the clouds with fire,
the whole earth shakes,
The whole earth shakes.
Hosanna! Hosanna!
Hosanna in the highest!

During communion we sang the following songs:

This Breaks My Heart of Stone
– Words by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) with new music by Benji Pocta.

Look as when thy pit’ing eye,
was closed that we might live;
“Father,” at the point to die,
my Savior cried, “Forgive”.
Surely with that dying word,
He turns and looks and cries, “Tis done!”
O my loving, bleeding Lord,
this breaks my heart of stone.

Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed – Words: Isaac Watts (1707), Music: Martyrdom, Hugh Wilson, (1800)

Well might the sun in darkness hide
And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died,
For man the creature’s sin.

Jesus Messiah by Chris Tomlin, Daniel Carson, Ed Cash, Jesse Reeves

He became sin, who knew no sin;
that we might become His righteousness;
He humbled Himself, and carried the cross.
Love so amazing, love so amazing.

The Crossing Music released a new free song last week.

Victorious Amen was originally written for the Good Friday service in 2010. Several months later a major rewrite occurred during The Shore recording sessions with our Co-Producer, David Wilton, but was left off the album. Now, two years after the original writing of the song, we have rearranged it a third time, seeing the song to completion.

We hope it serves as a helpful song of meditation & praise as we remember, mourn, celebrate, and worship our Victorious Savior during Holy Week. Be sure to join us for The Crossing’s Good Friday (4/6, 7:00 p.m.) and Easter services (4/8, 7:30, 8:45, 10:00 and 11:15 a.m.).
