On Good Friday we remembered Jesus, who humbled himself and became obedient to the cross. God has exalted him who has redeemed us from the bondage of sin and given us new freedom. Through our songs and prayers we expressed our gratefulness for Jesus the Christ and what he has done for us and continues to do for us
Were You There – Words: Traditional African Spiritual, Music: Clint Well
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Sometimes it causes me to tremble,
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
The Gospel Song by Drew Jones and Bob Kauflin
Holy God, in love, became
perfect Man to bear my blame.
On the cross He took my sin.
By His death I live again.
O Come and Mourn With Me Awhile – Words: Frederick W. Faber (1849), Music: Eric Ashley (1999)
O love of God! O sin of man!
In this dread act Your strength is tried;
And victory remains with love;
Jesus our Lord is crucified!
Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed – Words: Isaac Watts (1707), Music: Martyrdom, Hugh Wilson, (1800)
Alas! and did my Savior bleed
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
for such a wretch such as I?
Mighty is the Power of the Cross by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves and Shawn Craig
What can take a dying man
and raise him up to life again?
What can heal the wounded soul,
what can make us white as snow?
What can fill the emptiness,
what can mend our brokenness?
Mighty, awesome, wonderful
is the holy cross
where the lamb laid down His life
to lift us from the fall.
We read a prayer from The Valley of Vision called Love Lustres at Calvary giving us a full picture of what we gain through Christ’s sacrifvice
From Calvary’s cross wave upon wave of grace
reaches me, deals with my sin,
washes me clean, renews my heart,
strengthens my will, draws out my affection,
kindles a flame in my soul,
rules throughout my inner being,
consecrates my every thought, word, work,
teaches me Your immeasurable love.
Rock of Ages – Words: Augustus M. Toplady (1776), Contemporary chorus by Page CXVI (2009). Arrangement by Page CXVI and David Wilton
Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling.
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless look to Thee for grace.
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior or I die.
After a time of silent confession, we heard the assurance of our forgiveness from Colossians 1:19-22.
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.
How Deep the Father’s Love For Us by Stuart Townend, We used the arrangement by King’s Kaleidoscope
How deep the Father’s love for us,
how vast beyond all measure
that He should give His only Son
to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss,
the Father turns His face away
as wounds which mar the chosen One
bring many sons to glory.
During communion we sang the following songs:
Hallelujah! What A Savior – Words and Music: Phillip P. Bliss (1875), Additional Chorus: Leonard Cohen (based on the song Hallelujah)
Lifted up was He to die;
“It is finished!” was His cry;
Now in Heav’n exalted high.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross – Words by Isaac Watts (1749), Music by Lowell Mason (1824)
When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
All I Have is Christ by Jordan Kauflin
But as I ran my hell-bound race, indifferent to the cost,
You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross.
And I beheld God’s love displayed, You suffered in my place,
You bore the wrath reserved for me, now all I know is grace.
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ.
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.
