Getting Ready for Sunday May 11th at The Crossing

On Fridays we post a guide for how to prepare for the upcoming Sunday service. It gives you a chance to read the Bible passage ahead of time, see the song list, and get your mind and heart ready. You can see some of the rationale here.

We continue in Exodus but move to a new section this week. Dave Cover will preach from Exodus 20:18–21 in a sermon entitled, “Fear God or Be Afraid.” The Scripture reads,

18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

At the conclusion of the Ten Commandments, the Israelites are afraid. They’ve seen the wonders and the signs when God comes near, and it strikes fear in their hearts. But is it the right kind of fear? The Old Testament is full of the phrase “the fear of God.” What does it mean to fear God and how is that different from being afraid? Join us on Sunday as Dave unpacks this key way to understand how we should relate to God.

Our music this week will be led by Jodee Lewis. Jodee is an old friend of The Crossing—she has led worship for us before, and we sing some of her music regularly. Her distinctive style of alternative country and bluegrass will shape our time together on Sunday. Formerly of The Spares, Jodee recently released her first solo album, Whiskey Halo. You can also see her live at Mojo’s on Sunday night.
