Exposed: Secrets Revealed An Unusual Way

One of the core beliefs I’ve come to as a pastor is that sin makes you stupid. Sin makes otherwise smart, competent people do and believe incredibly stupid things. One of the stupid things that sin leads us to believe is that we’ll never get caught in our sin, that our sin won’t really do any serious damage, that our sin will remain undetected. That’s wrong every time. 100%. No exceptions.

So the new iOS 7 came out for the iPhone and as usual there were some bugs in the program that are still getting worked out. One of the bugs caused people who share the same iCloud account to get each others’ text messages. Now this has a funny side to it. I know of a dad who got every text meant for his daughter who’s a senior in high school. There wasn’t anything to hide there. Just a dad trying to interpret a foreign culture.

But then there are sad stories too. A woman called me this week saying that due to the glitch in the program texts meant for her husband started unexpectedly showing up on her phone. The wife discovered that her husband was committing adultery.

Numbers 32:23 But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

A Few Thoughts…

1. God is acting mercifully toward us whenever he exposes our sin. No one believes that at the moment you are “caught.” Instead we feel embarrassed or ashamed or angry but if we understood the damage and destruction that sin causes, we’d feel thankful. By exposing our sin, God is giving us a chance to repent and return to him. Don’t waste your chances.

2. “The one you can fool doesn’t count and the only one who counts you can’t fool.” That saying comes from a wise pastor that I met after becoming a Christian in college. At the risk of stating the obvious, he was saying that even if you’re successful at hiding your sin from your friends, spouse, etc…, ultimately they don’t count. And God, who ultimately is the only one who counts, can’t be fooled. That’s why I can say that you will be caught and exposed 100% of the time. God already knows all things.

3. What sins are you “hiding” in the darkness and are unwilling to bring into the light?

Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
